Program:  The NATA LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee (LGBTQ+ AC) has created a specific application for athletic training students to serve as student representative on the LGBTQ+AC.

Eligibility: Any athletic training student who champions inclusivity, has passion for advocacy, and is interested in the mission of the LGBTQ+AC. The applicant must also be a member of the NATA, have an NPI number and be enrolled in a professional level CAATE-accredited Athletic Training Program.

Position Description:
The athletic training student who is awarded the student representative position will be required to complete the following obligations:
  • Attend LGBTQ+AC committees meetings, including in-person meetings if travel funding is available.
  • Complete an annual report outlining their experience, learning and actionable items in which their leadership skills can contribute to the LGBTQ+AC.
  • Serve as a student liaison to the LGBTQ+AC for two years until the next student representative is chosen.
  • Complete an annual report during the time as the liaison to the LGBTQ+AC.
  • Collaborate with the Student Leadership Committee on any crossover projects relevant to the LGBTQ+AC’s mission.
  • Create LGBTQ+AC updates for dissemination in the Student Leadership Committee’s Quarterly Newsletter.
Application Procedure: Applicants must submit the entire grant application as ONE PDF DOCUMENT, including the following sections in this order:

  1. Application cover sheet
  2. Essay
    1. Why is leadership important for Athletic Trainers?
      1. Include your goals post-graduation
      2. Include your current leadership experiences, skills and goals.
    2. How can leadership within the profession of Athletic Training help build a more inclusive profession that advocates for patients and professionals alike?
      1. How could being a student liaison to the LGBTQ+ AC, help you advocate within Athletic Training?
      2. Include your SMART goals for serving as a student representative to the LGBTQ+ AC.
    3. Describe a barrier(s) facing Athletic Trainers today as it relates to the LGBTQ+ AC mission statement.
      1. Example: Professional development, patient care, promotion, etc. What specific barriers do you believe you will need to face when you enter the profession and how will this experience assist you in breaking down these barriers?
  3. Letter of recommendation from a certified AT.
  4. Resume
Evaluation Procedure: The LGBTQ+ AC will applications that meet the requirements for completeness and determine if the application contains the aforementioned components. The general procedures for review include:

  1. Mechanical review of the application for completeness.
  2. Review by the LGBTQ+AC.
  3. Phone interviews of top applicants by members of the committee.
  4. Top applicant decided by vote of the committee.
  5. Applicants notified by the LGBTQ+AC chair.
Criteria: Preference will be given to applicants that emphasize inclusivity, advocacy and passion for the LGBTQ+ AC’s mission statement. In addition, applicants should demonstrate:

  1. Quality of submitted materials;
  2. Appropriate qualifications.
Deadlines: The student representative application will be due October 15.

Notification: The Chair of the LGBTQ+ AC will notify the selected candidate by November 15.
